Former KRA Commissioner General Michael Waweru Passes Away

Former Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner General and East African Cables Board Chairman Michael Waweru has passed away. Waweru died on Friday, July 5, 2024, as announced by East African Cables, though the cause of his death was not disclosed.

Michael Waweru had served as Chairman of East African Cables since June 2017. The company praised him as a visionary leader whose dedication and guidance significantly contributed to the Group’s success. “He was not only a visionary leader but one with unwavering dedication, insightful guidance, and a pioneering spirit that laid the foundation for the Group’s success,” the company stated.

Waweru was eulogized for his immense experience and leadership, which helped strengthen the company’s systems and structures. His witty nature and ability to engage and lighten the mood even during challenging times were also fondly remembered.

Waweru’s notable career includes serving as the Commissioner General of Kenya Revenue Authority from 2003 to 2012. His transformative leadership at KRA earned him the Chief Order of the Burning Spear, awarded by the late former President Mwai Kibaki. Waweru’s strategies at KRA significantly boosted tax collection during his tenure.

Additionally, Waweru was a founding member of TransCentury Plc, an investment holding company. In recognition of his contributions to both the public and private sectors, KCA University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in 2022.
