William Ruto Visits Flood-Affected Mathare in Gumboots, Assures Residents of Support

President William Ruto made a surprise visit to Mathare slums, donning gumboots, a T-shirt, and blue jeans trousers, to assess the impact of recent floods. He assured residents of government support and a well-organized relocation plan for those living along riparian land.

Ruto also issued a stern warning to state officers handling stipends meant for supporting 40,000 households affected in Nairobi, emphasizing that the funds should not be misused.

Mathare has been heavily affected by the floods, with more than 10 residents losing their lives. Ruto praised the residents of Kiamaiko for voluntarily relocating as per the government’s directive and assured them of settlement until alternative arrangements are made.

The government has allocated KSh 1 billion for the reconstruction of schools destroyed by floods, ensuring that structures are in place before schools reopen.

Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to the flood victims, warning against misuse of the stipends, and emphasizing accountability. Raila Odinga also visited flood victims in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, urging the government to provide alternative accommodation for those affected by demolitions.

Despite government directives, some residents, like those in Gitwamba near Karimenu Dam, have resisted relocation near dams due to possible overflow risks.

In related news, Nakuru County and the national government have pledged burial support for relatives of victims of the Mai Mahiu tragedy.
