Martha Karua Calls for Resettlement of Flood Victims in Affordable Housing

Martha Karua, leader of the Narc Kenya Party, has urged the government to resettle flood victims in homes constructed under the affordable housing program. She emphasized that it is the government’s duty to provide for the affected families’ basic needs and to ensure they have access to shelter.

Karua criticized the proposed Finance Bill 2024, stating that while taxation is necessary, the current tax proposals are excessive and reminiscent of colonial-era taxes. She expressed concern that the tax burden is disproportionately affecting the poor, leading to food insecurity and hindering access to education.

The Azimio la Umoja coalition, to which Karua belongs, strongly condemned the tax proposals, warning of potential nationwide protests if the measures are implemented. Other members of the coalition, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, echoed Karua’s sentiments, accusing the government of being out of touch with the economic challenges facing ordinary Kenyans.

Karua’s comments highlight the ongoing debate over taxation and the government’s role in providing social services and support to vulnerable populations.
