US Military Establishes Base in Haiti for Kenyan Police Mission

The US military has established a base in Haiti to support the deployment of Kenyan police officers as part of the Multinational Security Support mission. This mission aims to assist Haitian police in reclaiming territory from gangs in Port-au-Prince. The US Southern Command organized the transportation of civilian contractors to Haiti from May 3 to May 5 to facilitate the construction of living quarters for the Kenyan-led international security force. The mission, approved by the UN Security Council in October, has faced delays due to legal challenges and escalating violence in Haiti, culminating in the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry in March. However, with the swearing-in of a transition council in Haiti on April 25, Kenyan President William Ruto stated that the deployment issues are being addressed.
