At an impressive 131 feet tall, the world’s tallest projector screen has been unveiled, requiring seven ultra-bright laser projectors to bring it to life. This custom screen, designed by AV Stumpfl with their Flex Contrast PRO surface, is the centerpiece of the “Planet Ozean” exhibition at the Gasometer museum in Oberhausen, Germany. The museum, a repurposed gas holder known as the “cathedral of industrial culture,” is hosting this ocean-themed exhibition until the end of the year.

The Planet Ozean Exhibition
“Planet Ozean” features the Die Welle (The Wave) sculpture, created by Ars Electronica Solutions and composer Rupert Huber of Tosca. The screen, measuring 40m x 20m (131 feet x 66 feet), rises from the central gallery of the Gasometer and is supported by seven 30,000-lumen laser projectors. This setup enables a stunning, immersive experience, showcasing life-sized whales, fish, and jellyfish in photo-realistic computer-generated visuals.

A Unique Visual Experience
Nils Sparwasser, curator of Die Welle, highlighted the unique, immersive experience offered by the sculpture and the projection screen, stating that such an experience could only be possible in the Gasometer. The exhibition allows visitors to feel as if they are interacting with the ocean’s giants, offering a rare opportunity to “hunt with sharks or marvel at humpback whales in their original size.”

Concept and Impact
Jeanette Schmitz, managing director of Gasometer Oberhausen and curator of Planet Ozean, praised the exhibition’s concept, emphasizing how it plays on the Gasometer’s vast space and captivates visitors. She noted that The Wave is a crucial component of the exhibition, providing an unparalleled insight into the ocean’s world through various communicative approaches.
